Observation Narrative
Habitat is within the most frequently burned portion of a 50 acre flatwoods underlain by an intrusive ultramafic sill. Analysis of the rock and soil shows phases high in calcium and/or magnesium, explaining the presence of numerous disjunct and unusual species for this region. This is only extant example of a regularly burned woodland on basic rock in Virginia. The specific plot area is in one of the most mesic sites. Trees measured (dbh in cm.): Quercus alba (40, 30), Carya ovalis (40), Nyssa sylvatica (53).
